I best express myself through movement.

I found my calling.

I attended the Asian American Justice Center Award Ceremony and its 20th Anniversary Celebration. This was truly a life-changing and eye-opening experience. I have never felt this inspired and motivated in a very long time. I am so blessed to have been surrounded by such significant, game-changing individuals in the Asian American Pacific Islander community. I was especially awestruck by two award recipients.

Diana Lee Inosanto, the winner of the American Courage Award, wrote, directed, produced, and acted in The Sensei (2008) about a martial arts teach teaching a young gay man the skills necessary to defend himself against bullies. This film gave voice to gay individuals and those with HIV/AIDS and help us understand their circumstance. I want to do this with dance. Combine my two loves: dance and fighting for social justice. I want my performances to spread a message and tell a story of Asian Americans that has to be told.

Jose Antonio Vargas, the winner of the American Spirit Award, still amazes me with his story about his immigration issues and his determination to change the process of becoming an US citizen. His work as a journalist and being founder of Define American, are things I deeply admire. I cried when I saw this video and listened to his empowering speech. He brings an excellent and fresh perception on what it means to be “American”.I was lucky to have spoken with him and take a picture.

This is why I became D6 Rep, Co-Cultural Affairs Coordinator, and President of the Philippine Cultural Society. This is why I devoted so much of my time and energy to D6 and F.I.N.D. This is why I majored in International Affairs. This is why I focused my thesis on Filipino human rights. Because I want to educate and awaken Asian Americans. Because I want us to progress. Because I want us to have the freedom we deserve.

I want to change the world. I will change the world.
